Special Issue Postage StampsMany, if not most, Scottish Islands fall outwith the normal UK Royal Mail
collection and delivery service. For these islands it is perfectly legal for the
landowner to charge a fee for postal services to the mainland. The
Island of Pabay (CN17) is notable
in this respect in that is has a long history in the philatelic community for the
issue of unique stamps. It was André's activation of that island in 1998 that led to a
unique stamp being produced, and such was the interest that, for a few select islands
- where permission was sought, the exercise has been successfully repeated.
Stamps are now produced, in strictly limited numbers, for certain
islands, and the income received is put back into GM3VLB's 'island activation fund'.
Each stamp is a high resolution image, and as is the modern trend, is produced on
self-adhesive paper. First Day Covers (FDCs) are also produced where the stamp is
specially franked on the first day of it's issue. Recent interest has shown that
special envelopes, again bearing a unique image are also of great interest to
philatelists around the world.
